Throughout his life, Duane Vernon, MSU Class of 1953, has demonstrated the outstanding class and character of a life-long Spartan. A member of the MSU Alumni Association and former President of the MSU Alumni club of Mid-Michigan, Duane Vernon has a love for his alma mater and a passion for his involvement in the Spartan community that rivals any other.
Duane is admired by many for his dedication to volunteer work, leadership and integrity. Six decades of such excellence have not gone unrecognized. Mr. Vernon is a recipient of the Clarence “Biggie” Munn Extra Effort Award, given to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service to MSU, making him the second Michigan State University alumni to ever receive such an honor. His die-hard love for MSU led him to be named to the Sports Fan Hall of Fame by Sports Illustrated in 2000.

Duane Vernon has a place in his heart for all Spartan fans, especially those of Mid-Michigan and Oceana County. He was thrilled when asked to be the honorary guest at the Cancer and Critical Care Fund’s first golf tournament fundraising event.
With its well-kept greens and historical white clubhouse, The Colonial Golf Course in Hart will open its arms to Mr. Spartan and all others attending the event On June 8th. Cancer and Critical Care Fund founder and CEO Patrick Fuller hopes that Duane’s enthusiasm for charitable organizations and exemplary acts of service will inspire others to make the “extra effort.”
